Department Of Government Information
Department of Government Information (DGI) is a key establishment of the Ministry of Mass Media. The department assists media in a macro level in welfare, training, policy planning and accreditation, and providing easy access to Government news and information. On the other hand, DGI also play an important role catering to the Government with data analysis, information, audio visuals, and archives. The department plays a major role in formulation of the Right to Information Bill.
HISTORY
DGI was established in 1948 at the Colombo Secretariat Complex with conform to instructions and recommendations of the first Superintendent of Information was P. Nadesan. At the inception it consisted three sections,
- News Provision Section
- Institute of Government Books and Papers
- Government Film Unit
Until late 1990s the DGI operated from different locations in Colombo. With the new building complex coming up at Polhengoda in Colombo, the DGI was finally brought to a permanent place.

MISSION
By taking steps to establish mutual communication media environment in Sri Lanka, to uplift media culture and to determine the rights of the general public for accurate information and vision of the government.
